Saturday 21st June - Oh dearie me

Alas, I have slid down the slippery slope of, er, slipperiness.

There has been cake, much more cake.
There has been takeaway (Indian, Thursday and Friday night)
There has been a marked drop in salad consumption.

0/10, must do better.

Even worse, my cake sale at school didn't go well and so now I also have a freezer full of cake.

I'll start again tomorrow.
I mean today.

Tuesday 17th June - Let There Be Cake

Bah, I have been scuppered.
A lovely well-meaning friend bought me a big piece of cake at lunchtime as I had a bit of a hideous start at work. I ate it, naturally.

Breakfast: berry bircher with raisins and seeds
Lunch: ham sandwich, salad
Tea: salad, potatoes, lentil bolognese
Snack: piece of cake the size of my head

Verdict: sat fat (est) 25g
FAIL!!!!!!

Monday 16th June

Back to work today! Plus points - I'm busy all day so don't think about food. Negative points - I sit waaaaaay too close to a biscuit cupboard :o(

However, today went well. The only small bit of cheating was when a lovely 6th former gave me a lollipop because she had half a million left over from her birthday celebrations two weeks ago :o)

Breakfast: Berry bircher
Lunch: Ham sandwich, lettuce, cucumber and radish salad, banana
Tea: red lentil bolognese, pasta shells, salad

verdict: 5g sat fats
yay!

Sunday 15th June

Eeeeeek! This was my potential pitfall day - a family BBQ with the outlaws.

I sort-of misunderstood the timings and arrived, peckish, at 4pm as instructed. This was not BBQ time, this was teatime. A man-trap of nachos with cheese and tea with sponge cake had been dug and carefully disguised.
I resisted.
BBQ kicked off in earnest at about 6pm, by which time I'd managed to have a sneaky look at the packet of snorkers and found there were 3.1g of sat fat in each snorker. The burgers were home made, so I had to estimate there, but I think 6g should cover it.
I'd managed to wangle pudding duty and did sorbet sundaes: lemon or mango sorbet with a blueberry and raspberry fruit salad. For those not trying to behave themselves I also got giant white chocolate buttons and Cadbury's white chocolate fingers.

Result:
Breakfast: banana and low fat yoghurt with raisins and sunflower seeds
Lunch: ham roll with salad
Tea: BBQ with salads, sorbet and fruit

sat fat (est): 18g

Saturday 14th June

The advantage of it being horrible o'clock in the morning when England lost to Italy meant that I was too tired to eat chips on the way home. Result!
Today was a busy day as we started moving house, had to hack back a jungle of weeds in the new garden, had four lots of people round to view house AND, most exciting, my brother came to visit, for the first time since I left home 19 years ago.
Admittedly it was because he was going on holiday from the airport 4 miles up the road, but still...

So, I had my usual berry bircher for breakfast, made a picnic lunch of salads, ham, salmon, potatoes, cheese and rolls (from which I chose the low sat-fat things) and then had left overs for tea.

Total sat fat (est): 5.3g

Total stolen shopping trolleys: 1
(not my fault, my rucksack got caught on the edge of someones trolley and when I walked away it followed me)

Friday 13th June

Yep, picked the most auspicious day to start! It's Friday 13th, a Full Moon and also I have my Books and Biscuits club in the school library.
I avoided the chocolate chip cookies by checking the packet - they had 1.2g of sat fat in each cookie and they were really small! I wrote notes instead of stuffing my face.

Overall, not a bad effort, I think I had 8-8.5g of sat fat today.

Breakfast: berry bircher
Lunch: beef sandwich, tomatoes, carrots
Snack: banana
Tea: roast veg and hummous sandwich and fruit salad

Also I got to meet Sir Ranulph Fiennes at a talk and book signing in Cambridge. And he smiled at me, therefore I do not need cake.

Thursday 12 June 2014

I shall start tomorrow...

I have a sweet tooth. I also have 3 1/2 months until my next cholesterol test. I have to behave myself until October to see if I can bring my cholesterol level down to 5. It may all be a waste of time, in which case - hurrah! a lifetime of cakes awaits! - but on the other hand it might not, and it could make a difference to my health.

If I don't keep an online diary of what I eat and how much exercise I do, I'll cheat. I know this because I was supposed to start today. Having failed to make my berry bircher last night I had granola for breakfast and then I was unwell so took no lunch to work. And then I had a chocolate biscuit....see?

So, my quest to reduce my cholesterol level begins. Matchbox size pieces of cheese. Lay off the biscuits and cakes...I shall start tomorrow.
